Public health approach

We are committed to implementing a public health approach to violence prevention in Northamptonshire. We will do everything we can to tackle the causes of serious violence to intervene and ensure that communities feel safe.

We look at serious violence like a doctor treats a disease. We understand the causes, identify the risks and intervene to stop its spread, empowering people with the tools and knowledge to contribute to prevention.

This approach takes the following steps:

  1. Defining the problem
  2. Identifying the risk and protective factors
  3. Developing and testing preventions
  4. Widespread adoption

The public health model is the key to our approach to serious violence in Northamptonshire. By tackling the root causes of serious violence, we can prevent it from happening and improve the lives of individuals and communities.

Prevention is at the core of the NSVPP and applies to interventions across three different levels.

Public health approach to prevention

Primary Prevention: This can be viewed as an immunisation; it is a solution on a population level to reduce the number of people requiring support through further interventions.

Secondary Prevention: Similar to catching an illness early and treating it to prevent it from getting worse, these are early interventions designed, after early warning signs have been observed, to slow, halt, or reverse serious violence.

It can involve the de-escalation of violence and conflict handling alongside effective planning. Through secondary preventions we aim to lower the chances of those involved in violence being involved again.

Tertiary Prevention: This is a response to serious violence after it has occurred, treating the effects and supporting those who have been impacted.
